cK Goes Fencing

CK AND PALS MASTER THE LOST ART OF FENCING!

Myself, the Tazemaster, Vinh & Bo Wen met up with Iq's cousins to celebrate Amina & Nadia birthdays in fashion. How, you might be asking? Well by getting dressed up in armor and poking each other with fencing swords!! That's how!!

It was a very unique idea that brought everyone to the Toronto Fencing Academy in Downsview. A group of 30+ of us crowded the venue and were excited to try this sport that required lots of thinking and precise skill. Fencing -- the lost art of swashbuckling! Don't get it twisted, fencing is a lot more than trying to hit your opponent with a sword, in fact, that's not even what its all about. Fencing is more of a "poke" sport where your sword has a slight sensor at the very tip that signals to a box when you actually got your opponent. So just wild slices of your sword will probably not get you a point and leave you open for your opponent to strike you. It's quite fascinating!

We all got an hour training lesson from the staff. The main person overseeing everything was a guy named, Igor. He was excellent and very patient with our large group. He showed us basic techniques and hoped that the info he gave us sunk in our heads. After a little practicing with our swords on the walls, we were ready to be suited up. That took about 45 mins! Because our group was so big, the Toronto Fencing Academy brought out brand new, never used face masks, suits, swords for us to use! After we were all suited up, we got to challenge people to duels. Each match was refereed and the first person to get 5 points was declared the winner of the duel. The Tazemaster was very reckless with his unorthodox skills, ending with a 5-1 win/loss record. Vinh was also very competitive and won a few, lost a few. I was pretty much the same, I won matches against Vinh, but Tazemaster was unstoppable!

After our time was up, we thanked our hosts and went to have all-you-can-eat sushi in Markham. It was quite the day! The fencing however, was an experience I'll never forget! Special thanks to Igor and the entire staff at the Toronto Fencing Academy!!
