cK Goes To Caribana 2009

CK AND TAZEMASTER ARE LUCHADORS AT THE BIGGEST PARADE IN NORTH AMERICA

It was my return to Caribana since 2006. The last 2 years I wasn't in my usual Caribana vibe. However, 2009 is the year I definitely returned, and in a luchador attire.

The last Caribana updates I wrote about were in 2003 and 2002. The golden years where N8 Dogg and I would hit all the lead up parties, after-parties and boat cruises. Oh, what times they were!! A lot has changed since then. Caribana is now properly known as "Scotiabank Caribana", the Palazzo Nightclub where the annual Soca Rave was no longer exists and is being demolished, and due to a recent city strike - the annual Caribana on the Toronto Islands was moved to Ontario Place.

Seems like a weird year for Caribana. However, it was still fun and drew over a million people. I went walking down Yonge Street on the Friday night, checking out the cars and all the people walking about. Saturday, the Tazemaster, my cousin Noel and Nafeeza all ventured downtown to the parade and had a great time. This year, 8 foot fences were implemented to help control people traffic. On paper, it sounded like a horrible and controversial idea. However, when I was there in person, it actually was a fantastic idea. For the first time ever, I went to Caribana, and it felt very organized. Not once was I in too much of a crowd and felt like I was suffocating in a sea of people. Thanks to the fencing, people were constantly moving, or at least allowed them enough space to do so.

For the spirit of Caribana's masquerade, the Tazemaster and I wore luchador masks. It was a big attention grabber as numerous people would ask to take a picture with us. I lost count of how many people posed with us and took pics of me posing! It was very fun and definitely memorable. Come to think of it, I think this might be the very first Caribana that I went with the Tazemaster!
